Orientation fluctuation-induced spinodal decomposition in polymer–liquid-crystal mixtures
We study the early stages of spinodal decomposition (SD) in polymer–liquid-crystal mixtures by solving linearized time-dependent Landau-Ginzburg equations for concentration (conserved order parameter) and orientation (nonconserved order parameter). The theory takes into account a cross term between concentration and orientation gradients, which becomes an important factor for phase separation kinetics. We calculate structure factors for concentration and for orientation, depending on a quench temperature and concentration. We find a new SD process driven by instability of the orientational order parameter. In this case, the average domain size initially grows as a nontrivial and evolving power of time, which starts as t1/3 in our minimal model. The domain growth is advanced by the coupling between the two order parameters
Simple Model for the Deformation-Induced Relaxation of Glassy Polymers
Glassy polymers show “strain hardening”: at constant extensional load, their flow first accelerates, then arrests. Recent experiments have found this to be accompanied by a striking and unexplained dip in the segmental relaxation time. Here we explain such behavior by combining a minimal model of flow-induced liquefaction of a glass with a description of the stress carried by strained polymers, creating a nonfactorable interplay between aging and strain-induced rejuvenation. Under constant load, liquefaction of segmental motion permits strong flow that creates polymer-borne stress. This slows the deformation enough for the segmental modes to revitrify, causing strain hardening
Dynamics and stress in gravity driven granular flow
We study, using simulations, the steady-state flow of dry sand driven by
gravity in two-dimensions. An investigation of the microscopic grain dynamics
reveals that grains remain separated but with a power-law distribution of
distances and times between collisions.
While there are large random grain velocities, many of these fluctuations are
correlated across the system and local rearrangements are very slow. Stresses
in the system are almost entirely transfered by collisions and the structure of
the stress tensor comes almost entirely from a bias in the directions in which
collisions occur.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figures, RevTe
Continuum limit of amorphous elastic bodies: A finite-size study of low frequency harmonic vibrations
The approach of the elastic continuum limit in small amorphous bodies formed
by weakly polydisperse Lennard-Jones beads is investigated in a systematic
finite-size study. We show that classical continuum elasticity breaks down when
the wavelength of the sollicitation is smaller than a characteristic length of
approximately 30 molecular sizes. Due to this surprisingly large effect
ensembles containing up to N=40,000 particles have been required in two
dimensions to yield a convincing match with the classical continuum predictions
for the eigenfrequency spectrum of disk-shaped aggregates and periodic bulk
systems. The existence of an effective length scale \xi is confirmed by the
analysis of the (non-gaussian) noisy part of the low frequency vibrational
eigenmodes. Moreover, we relate it to the {\em non-affine} part of the
displacement fields under imposed elongation and shear. Similar correlations
(vortices) are indeed observed on distances up to \xi~30 particle sizes.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures, 3 table
Jamming and Stress Propagation in Particulate Matter
We present simple models of particulate materials whose mechanical integrity
arises from a jamming process. We argue that such media are generically
"fragile", that is, they are unable to support certain types of incremental
loading without plastic rearrangement. In such models, fragility is naturally
linked to the marginal stability of force chain networks (granular skeletons)
within the material. Fragile matter exhibits novel mechanical responses that
may be relevant to both jammed colloids and cohesionless assemblies of poured,
rigid grains.Comment: LATEX, 3 Figures, elsart.cls style file, 11 page
Phase Separation of Rigid-Rod Suspensions in Shear Flow
We analyze the behavior of a suspension of rigid rod-like particles in shear
flow using a modified version of the Doi model, and construct diagrams for
phase coexistence under conditions of constant imposed stress and constant
imposed strain rate, among paranematic, flow-aligning nematic, and log-rolling
nematic states. We calculate the effective constitutive relations that would be
measured through the regime of phase separation into shear bands. We calculate
phase coexistence by examining the stability of interfacial steady states and
find a wide range of possible ``phase'' behaviors.Comment: 23 pages 19 figures, revised version to be published in Physical

Orientations of the lamellar phase of block copolymer melts under oscillatory shear flow
We develop a theory to describe the reorientation phenomena in the lamellar
phase of block copolymer melt under reciprocating shear flow. We show that
similar to the steady-shear, the oscillating flow anisotropically suppresses
fluctuations and gives rise to the parallel-perpendicular orientation
transition. The experimentally observed high-frequency reverse transition is
explained in terms of interaction between the melt and the shear-cell walls.Comment: RevTex, 3 pages, 1 figure, submitted to PR
Stress Transmission through Three-Dimensional Ordered Granular Arrays
We measure the local contact forces at both the top and bottom boundaries of
three-dimensional face-centered-cubic and hexagonal-close-packed granular
crystals in response to an external force applied to a small area at the top
surface. Depending on the crystal structure, we find markedly different results
which can be understood in terms of force balance considerations in the
specific geometry of the crystal. Small amounts of disorder are found to create
additional structure at both the top and bottom surfaces.Comment: 9 pages including 9 figures (many in color) submitted to PR
